The Departments of Medical Microbiology & Immunology and Bacteriology have sponsored the Perlman Symposium on Antibiotic Discovery and Development since 2010. The symposium highlights the medical aspects of antibiotic and microbiological research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This symposium is made possible by a generous gift from Kato Perlman in memory of David Perlman who was the Dean of the School of Pharmacy from 1968-75.
David Perlman was born and educated in Madison, Wisconsin. David Perlman was the Dean of the School of Pharmacy from 1968-75. Prior to coming to the UW, he worked 23 years in the pharmaceutical industry including stints at Hoffman-LaRoche, Merck and Squibb. He held 23 U.S. patents on antibiotics and their modifications. Thus, the Perlman Symposium aims to honor the accomplishments of David Perlman by bringing together current members of the UW community who share an excitement and interest in antibiotics.
